e-ID in your Cell Phone?

Belgian minister Vincent Van Quickenborne wants to integrate the e-ID  (electronic identity card) into the SIM of your cell/smart phone.

All Belgians now have an e-ID as a chip on their regular identity card, although it carries your identity data there aren’t many card readers so we don’t use this e-ID to its extend.  The e-ID was launched years ago but failed in its initial purpose because of the lack of a good integration (even on the government level).

Now it’s the idea to use the cell/smart phone (or mobile device) as the new “card reader” as the SIM could hold your ID data. The Spanish telecom operator showed this application of the SIM at Mobile World Congress. We’ll see…..because even this applications holds some questions:

What about privacy? (Again an issue, or not?….since our mobile device is always traceable. And what about people who don’t have a mobile device….do they still exist?)
